Patient Treatment
Providing patients with educational resources helps them
manage their pain. Headache management includes an analysis
of the individual's lifestyle, including diet, exercise,
relaxation and stretching programs, as well as sleep therapy.
The Center's clinicians provide education, support and
guidance to patients throughout their treatment. Migraine-specific
medications, although extremely effective, are not the
sole solution for the treatment of severe and refractory
headaches. Other treatment plans include specific peripheral
nerve injections, Botulinum toxin injection and, in some
cases, surgery to resect superficial forehead and scalp
muscles.
Comprehensive Treatment of Headache
Patients who have not responded to standard medical and
pharmacological therapy of migraine and other headache disorders
have many other options for therapy at the American Migraine
Center. Injections
of Botulinum toxin often provide dramatic relief of headache
due to migraine or tension-type headache for a period of
several months. Surgical treatment of refractory headache
is recommended in select patients. Referral to psychologists
specifically trained in headache management for biofeedback
and training in psychological pain and stress management
techniques are offered to our patients, when felt appropriate.

Surgical Treatment
The surgical procedures by Dr.
Bahman Guyuron will eliminate
or significantly reduce migraine headaches by removing
triggering sites, such as small muscles pinching cranial
nerves or a deviated septum causing inflammation of
the sinuses. The surgery is performed under deep sedation
or general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. Scientific
studies conducted by the team from this Center over
the last five years have demonstrated a response
rate of 90 percent in properly selected
patients. Many of these patients have been symptom-free.

Research
The physicians and surgeons at the American Migraine Center
are nationally recognized researchers for the scientific
study of migraine and other headache syndromes. Many patients
who attend the Center will have the option to participate
in study protocols of new medications or procedures under
investigation for the treatment of migraine, tension and
cluster headaches.
The Center's mission includes providing education
and consultation to healthcare professionals, residents and
medical students interested in learning about advances in
headache management. Our healthcare professionals participate
in research on the causes of headache, state-of-the-art,
revolutionary approaches to headache treatment, and outcome
analysis.
